Hi Jason,

Generally speaking - the fly leg of the loop is shaped by the tip path during the casting stroke from RSP0 to RSP1

The rod leg is shaped by the tip path during counterflex ie RSP1 to RSP2.

If the line speed to RSP1 is shared between casting stroke and hauling hand the casting stroke force will be less (same total line speed) which means less bend in the rod and therefore counterflex will be smaller and the loop narrower.

Since hauling finishes at RSP1 (usually!) this means that it continues as the rod is unloading. It may or may not control/straighten the tip path from MCL to RSP1.

There are actually some line/rod combinations that are very difficult to cast without hauling.

Cheers, Paul

If you need a diagram/explanation of the acronyms above let me know!

The “unknown” is a curious one. It probably has to do with haul finishing either slightly pre or post RSP. Unfortunately I can’t throw them at will. I’ve only noticed it perhaps a dozen times (maybe twice that) and don’t have any on film. But they unroll just fine :)

~ sorry my writing is terrible I know, and it’s only gotten worse over the years. It’s not uncommon for me not to be able to read it. I once had a casting gathering at my place in Essex. We went to the pub and I took the order for the Indian takeaway. By the time I had crossed the road from the pub to the restaurant, not only could I not read the order but I had forgotten what it was. Naturally someone got a different meal than ordered. (I think it was James!).

Thanks for taking the time to draw that mate.
CS= cord straightening?
Handwriting will be a thing of the past in the not too distant future anyway mate....we will probably be asking Siri or google to take the order for Indian lol.

This is definitely not the cause Paul. I throw them at will with or without a haul. The trick is to use the absolute minimum power needed to reach the distance and to keep the tip high after loop formation,

I won't bother telling people why I believe they are happening because I'm too tired to fight that battle.

Cheers,
Graeme

Thanks!!!
Paul

PS when I’ve seen them they have all been 170/Stopless backcasts.
