I agree with traveling, you need to take tying kit and materials with you.
Most of the times I travel, I take lots of flies, while I am there always found out I need something different flies than the ones worked there last time.
I take the materials required for that place, offcourse my vice and kit as well.
My traveling vice is this. [Pic.]
Coast me $15 aus. with a little bit of spot welding.
It holds small hooks so tight you can not move them on the vice grip.
Even at home I use this for hooks size 10 and below, you can use them even 4/0 hooks and above.

Depending on weight, I often use a pair of forceps as a hand vise for the hooks while tying. I find having a mobile kit essential, not only for tying unexpected flies but also for modifying existing ones. Another thing I find extremely useful is having permanent ink marker pens for changing colours of flies - for example I turn my termite patterns into ants with a black marker pen. There is certainly an argument for tying flies in white and then colouring them in as required.
