It’s an amazing world here at SL and I feel incredibly fortunate. Sometimes Board members disappear from the front line for whatever reason but I do try to stay in touch with as many as I can. Gerhard the Jolly Green Giant is most certainly one of them
This is a close friend I made through the Board very many years ago but because of circumstances outside of our control we have never actually met in person... yet. But this we both know will change and I’ve been trying hard to get him to visit for a LONG trip to Malaysia
Back in the days pre-Facebook, and maybe even still nowadays, you could really make sincere genuine friends through the Board/internet.
Anyway Gerhard makes knives now and it’s a manshit thing. He’s made me a parang with a grip that connects well with Viking Lars’ Dragon Knife.
I’ll attach some links of his making this beast. The next best thing to doing this yourself is to have a friend make this for you - and maybe that’s even better! There is something truly earthy about forging knives. There is a real connection there. That’s a spiritual connection that goes pretty damned close to brotherhood.
Gerhard wants a silver coin in return when he visits - that’s his tradition. And it will happen
Cheers, Paul

Look at that! Very nice, Paul. Do you sharpen with stones and a leather strop and compound to finish it off?
All the best

Re: Parang for the Jungle
Here I regard it as an essential tool. Virtually everyone has one in the jungle. I even see locals on mopeds carrying them. Kids too!!
Would love to have the Orang Asli skills of building with bamboo. I hope to learn these!
