Long line casting - feet positions and movements
Hi All,
For a project, I am classifying lower limb movement options as;
Rod side leg in front, no step,
Haul side leg in front, no step,
Rod side leg in front, with step,
Haul side leg in front, with step,
At this stage I am not considering stepping variations or a stance with no leading leg, will do that later.
Has anyone any other options?
Thanks in advance,
John

Re: Long line casting - feet positions and movements
Hi John,
I see at least two variations with the step. For example if you finish right leg forward you can have started right leg forward (does this constitute a step or a half step?). You can also start right leg back – but I’m not sure if this is a full step or two steps?
Cheers, Paul

Agree Paul, thanks for your reply. For this exercise I want to start with movement and positioning descriptors, I'll look at the range and sequencing of variations later. It is interesting to see how different casters establish their base and initiate their body movement.

Re: Long line casting - feet positions and movements
John,
Are you starting with the feet and moving up, or have you cemented your upper body theories and are now working down?
Of late, my fishing has made me think about casting as if I do not have any lower body options: I am kneeling in a canoe with both knees on the deck, or actually on a foam pad. I may cast 90 degrees to the port, straight ahead, or 90 degrees to starboard. Whether my "stance" is foot forward, closed, or open depends on which direction, and there is definitely no stepping.
I know it is not a topic for this discussion, but someday I would like to hear your ideas on how to cast the best from this type of lower body restriction.

Re: Long line casting - feet positions and movements
Hi Gary,
Like all sports, performance starts from a solid base, but as you mention, there are many fishing examples you mention in which that is not possible, standing on slippery surfaces, sitting, kneeling etc etc. Often, we need to modify how we use the body to generate our best fishing outcomes. In a number of posts I have focused on the upper body but it all starts from the lower body. I hope to develop some thoughts in the near future.
