So my roll casts suck and I really need to be better at them. However the bailiffs on the lake 200m from my house won't let me practise on it. 'No floating bait' is the rule. And no fly fishermen, as it's dangerous. Or something.

Anyway, the park next door has no such silly restrictions. But sadly no water, only lush grass.

Now someone once mentioned pegging the end of my line into the ground and throwing little loops around the neck of a bottle about 10' short of the peg.

But what say you lot?

What's a good way to practise roll casting on grass?

Use much longer at least 50ft nylon line (leader) which you tie about 50ft ahead and you can cast real line loops.

If you get snow or you find an empty asphalt parking lot which has become smooth you can practice even Spey casting using tied up very long leader. On grass this does not work very well because when there comes sideways pull to the line there comes too erratic behavior.

Hi Neil,

It's quite possible to Roll Cast over grass, just use lots of translation (Drag) and rotate late. Slippery floors are impossible. I like the casting around a stake game, you can practise throwing the loops from one side of the body, wishing them around the stake, and then reverse body side and unwind them.

Cheers
Paul

A sample setup, including lengths of line and leader? would be good.

No snow here in London - it's very rare.

Thanks folks - have a great Christmas.

It doesn't matter, Neil, the important points are to put enough line behind the rod tip and to start the CS with a long period of Drag, then best is to cast with pull-back.

The stroke is identical to a Seitch Cast over water.

Cheers, Paul

Seitch cast. Right! Why didn’t you say so ;-)

Will set something up and most likely post up a video of me *not* doing it right :-)
