Yeah, I'd agree with that. I was making some assumptions about the video which I suspect shows someone casting slow with tight loops. The angle at which someone is viewing or photographing also has an effect.

Crossed loop is a much better term. Or closed loop. I also don’t like it :)

Crossed legs, it's the Sharon Stone cast. :666: Closed loop is different - its circular and the fly invariably catches the rod leg.

Basically a wavy fly leg is a bad thing, unless you want a wavy fly leg, in which case it’s a good thing.

I've been told by an L2 examiner that it's okay during the CI exam to cast with my rod canted slightly off vertical. The reason being is that at vertical, my fly often hits the rod tip; off vertical it does not. That cant (or plane) is okay so long as the student can clearly see what the instructor is doing.

I've also been told that in task 8 (slow, medium and fast casts), an underslung loop in the slow cast is good and is somewhat expected. "Make the slow slower until the cast collapses and then speed it up just a bit." That makes the differentiation between slow and medium more distinguishable. As the speed increases, the trail goes away.

As for the trail, it seems to be Macauley's default in his demonstration video here, partially shown in the clip Jarmo provided.

I'm always impressed by his loop control.
