Another thought on practice: I should probably start out at a shorter distance and start working out from there.

I really think the best option is not to aim at the hole but to the box itself with the plan that as the leader unrolls it moves into the box. Trying to put a complete loop through the pillar is going to be extraordinarily difficult. In fact it’s going to be difficult anyway :D The other problem is that you might get the loop in but not the fly.

As Gary points out a side loop Is a better option. 4ft off the ground means you can probably cast with a horizontal rod plane, level with the slot, aiming to hit to the left side of the slot with the loop.

How far down is the rabbit? Does the fly have to go in, drop 4ft to the bottom, and then snag the bunny?!
