Whole line out!

#1

Post by barrysthlm »

Tonight I managed to cast an entire line for the first time, with the backing knot shooting out through the top eye. The fly was about 105ft away, probably would have been further but it was stuck in a fence about 15ft up. #5 rod with a 27,5m Guideline 4-cast #5 line, 10.8m head, and 12ft of leader.

My wife wasn’t suitably impressed so I thought I’d share on here. :)

Fantastic Barry... it’s a great feeling of satisfaction the first time...
I’ve stuck at about a rods length of backing out the rod tip, I just don’t have the commitment to keep practicing distance to progress to the next stage and get distracted by other casting areas to easily .... are you gonna keep pushing for further?

Thanks everyone!

Paul - it’s a football pitch so the fence is 40 ft high. I’ll give it a go though ;)

Boisker- yes. I only had enough backing off the reel to send a foot out past the tip, and it thwacked at the reel, so there’s more to get out of my current cast. (it’s actually mono running line I added for just this moment, backing seems to tangly to strip off too much)

Now that I’ve hit this milestone I’m going to switch to a long belly line (SA Mastery Expert Distance competition), and I should hopefully get a few feet out of that. If I look at my haul, drift, acceleration and especially my backcast I can see faults everywhere so I can definitely do better.

I expect I’ll be stuck at this distance for a while, it seems to go up in spurts.

The key more me getting there was to really to analyze everything. Every time I screwed up I tried to recreate the screw up so I understood it properly. “Troubleshooting the Cast” and the videos here really helped.
