Casting accuracy / rod length

#1

Post by Boisker »

Just a quick question...
do people predominantly use a 9’ rod in accuracy?
I ask as I wondered whether a 8’4” or 8’6” would be better.

I think the US team use deep flexing / slower / glass rods? Anyone know what length?

The slower rod interests me as I feel I am probably most accurate with my 9’ radian (this is fishing, I should compare against targets)

Yes 9ft rods are used mostly because there are more of them. Chris Corich said that when rod has heavier and softer (8'6'') blank the line length out of rod has less effect to rod bend so there is less need to change casting stroke on 8m...15m range.

I bought NexTackle 11ft #2 four piece blank (about 45 euros from ebay/Bulgaria) which CCS at full 3310mm are IP58g, AA65 with an idea to have soft and very slow action accuracy rod and at 2750mm length from rear it is IP116g, AA50 and test casting with only taped guides I feel it has potential to become an acceracy rod. I really like when selling company data listed the blank weight 53,3g and on my scale it is 53,1g. Its ferrules enter shortest length I have ever seen which is slight concern?

Chris is using an old Fenwick Rod from about 20-30 years ago. For hovering the fly, more rounded loops, longer tip travel and a much more comfortable cast a softer Rod is better. For example with the 5MED on the HT4 I can cast for hours but on the HT6 my hand starts to cramp after about ten minutes.

In Cumbria last year however with the Cumbrian hurricane they were all using much stiffer rods.

With regards length many prefer 8’6”. I don’t have the experience to know if it’s better for me.

Have you tried measuring your rod?

Yes of course. My Instructor 6 is spot on 9'. I can't remember what the HT10 is but I know it's competition legal, because I checked!

Cheers, Paul

That's cool! I haven't got a single rod that is spot on, majority is shorter and a few longer. The one I have been using is 8'9" even if the number above the cork says 9..
Mind you, comp legal is 9'1" 😉

And I had to ask, something about telling you to measure a leader, you saying you did, and then you hadn't you know 😉

Believe it or not I did actually measure it but not very well. Very weird. I reckon I stretched it!
