Jungle Buzzers

#1

Post by Paul Arden »

So I bought a fish tank from the neighbour with the idea of introducing some very small Giant Gourami to sturdy them and become their friends. Later of course I’ll release them back to the lake where I can catch them again.

Anyway we haven’t got any Gourami in the tank yet because even the small ones are bastards to catch. However I went to a neighbouring lake for some water - didn’t want to use tap water - and I’ve noticed that I have a hatch of buzzers.

This takes me back to my teenage years when I had a “bug tank” for studying bugs and imitating them. I had a buzzer hatch there too!

However this is quite interesting because I’m pretty damned sure that these little dirt mounds are the home of the larvae. Every once in while one comes out, wriggles around for a while and returns to its home.

I thought that the larvae of buzzers lived as bloodworm under soil but it appears that they are more versatile than this. Hopefully I will have a nice buzzer colony and eventually a few Giant Gourami babies in the future. :)

Cheers, Paul

Ooh get this - one time on the lake I saw three big Giant Gourami (all over 5KG) sipping down these buzzers in a tight group. These midge are around size 22. What a challenge that would be!!!
