shaping the fly leg
Dear board,
I'm beginning to throw smaller sized loops when just using the rod hand.
I am now trying to translate this result to the situation where I double haul. I must say, the front of the loop actually doesn't look that bad. But from time to time I get these oddly shaped fly legs (see the image attached). I guess 'a' is pretty ok, but the others are definitely lot.
I am not sure whether this helps, but in my training I have been focusing on making long, evenly accelerating hauls. I think this is going better and now I am trying to be more delicate with my rod movement (decreasing power and arc).
I would like to ask whether someone could please explain what causes the fly leg to move upward and perhaps even guestimate what I'm doing wrong
Cheers,
Richard

Re: shaping the fly leg
D is where you've clipped the ground with the fly or leader (called ticking here), this causes wrinkles in the fly leg. In extreme cases such as your diagram the friction ignites the fly line leaving a smoking, charred mess

Re: shaping the fly leg
Actual video helps alot more than artistic drawings
Have a look at these two clips and see if you find a resemblance with some of your findings
Cheers
Lasse
Ps. Paul is wrong as usual, he's just not paying attention, clearly those two can happen, they are right there

Where the hell is c?
I can make c happen by throwing a steeple cast followed by an aeriel wave.

Ok, so the drawings depict back loops - given the reel's aspect. Based on that perhaps C happens during a fck'd up Snap... ? But that is guess work.

Re: shaping the fly leg
So what’s b? Trajectories separated by more than 180 degrees and the end of the line flips up?
Richard, what sort of practise leader do you use?
Cheers, Paul

Re: shaping the fly leg
I could be wrong, it seems to me the result of two things together, early departure and short leader.
