Line management video/description

#1

Post by Paul Arden »

Hi folks,

Does anyone have a line management video or description where the line is gathered into loops on moving water (or sinking lines while wading for that matter) when a basket is not being used? I’m thinking large loop to pinkie, slightly smaller to third finger and so on. This is for a discussion on deep wading.

Cheers, Paul

My routine for the MCI exam (Task 13):
  • Four strips into the water and loop over the pinky finger
  • Four strips and loop over the ring finger
  • Three strips and loop over the middle finger
  • Two strips and loop over the index finger
  • One and a bit strips and hold the line ready for the cast.
That gives me a cast to 65' for the SW quick cast from a skiff, but I developed this routine when the task was on water. I don't have a video for it though.

Cheers,
Graeme

Thanks Graeme. I’m not so accurate in my measurements. It’s a skill I work on but not enough. When deep wading a river however it’s a crucial one to have. I’m happy to gather loops around the index finger only and feed them off with thumb pressure.

When flats fishing I dump them prior to the cast but on rivers I hang on and feed them.

Cheers, Paul

Hi Paul,

I do the same as Graeme, it just takes a lot of trial and error depending on how much line you have out :) I usually start out with 5 strips on the little finger, then 4 on the ring, then 3 on the middle etc for your standard distances. It's only a guide of course. :)

All the best!

Have you considered the yr3d line holder?

It’s a weird thing. I’ve seen at least three versions and have been given two to try. I don’t like the fact that someone invents something and others copy. Anyway despite all of that I’ve never fished with one. I first saw one about 12 years ago at Haysie’s place. I was given the original about 10 years ago but somehow someone else ended up with that one and I still have a Chinese one which has some bling packaging that I was given on a trip to Harbin. If I remember I have it at home and will give it a play. I was excited to get it because I never got the first but quite frankly any promotion will go to the first. Having said that maybe they are all being licensed which I certainly hope and I can get my foot out my mouth/arse :)

Cheers, Paul

I saw the first one about 18 years ago, and it wasn't from Haysie. And seen quite a few different takes on similar designs. Don't know who came up with it the first time, but a swedish pikefisher has a simple version, I'll dig out a pick asap....

I don't know what it's supposed to look like, but the pic in the link looks like a cancerous jellyfish to me.  Even with reading glasses on. :D

Even though I'm nowhere near ready to start working on an MCI, this is a great topic. How many times have we mucked up line control and stepped on our lines! And just when we were about to shoot it? :p
