Hi All
This might be a stupid question, but anyway, here goes:
I have been reading a lot of the Sexyloops front pages over the years, and a lot of them detail some lines and rods used for DH competitions… And there are many terms I don’t understand and can’t figure out…
It’s terms such as S55 and S20 shooting heads (and many more) and the mentioning of specialized rods in 15-18 foot lengths used to cast these lines. But what does all this mean?
Can anyone please take the time to explain this to me, or perhaps provide a link to a website that details the type of lines (length and weight) and rods used?
Then I hope to make better sense of possible future front pages…
Thanks in advance, it will be much appreciated!

Re: S55 and others - What does it mean?
Hi Bendix
SD55 stands for salmon distance 55 grams shootinghead, and is an event cast in the world championships of flycasting. Often shortened to S55 salmon 55 grams. Mostly because the single event seatrout distance is shortened STD27 and brings funny smirks amongst english speaking people, that one is often shortened SD27... flyfishers are anything but consistent.
SD 55 is cast with a rod that is maximum 15 feet 1 inch, STD27 is cast with a rod that is maximum 10 feet long.
I don't know of an event cast that is names S20 though
Might it be the S120 that is cast in casting sport? That is a super fast sinking shootinghead weighing 120 grams, cast with a twohanded flagpole of a rod. I have tried Steve Rajeff's, butt is so thick that the handle is just tape directly on the blank.
Cheers
Lasse

Flycasting, so simple that instructors need to make it complicated since 1685
Got a Q++ at casting school, wearing shorts

Hi Lasse
Thank you very much for this thorough guide to what the terms mean. This has been very helpful indeed!
And yes, it was the S120 I meant, I just remembered that incorrectly…
Now everything makes a lot more sense.

Re: S55 and others - What does it mean?
Just to add to what Lasse said; the Salmon S55 event is cast with a floating line. The T120 (I've not seen it called S120) is cast with a very high density sinking line (~2.2g/cc). A really good cast (in perfect weather) with the S55 is ~70m, whereas it is ~80m with the T120.

Hi James
Yeah my fault, T120.
Also, there's a 3 m/s max limit wind for T120 casts to be counted as records, none for the SD55.
Cheers

I'd need 3 times that wind to get anywhere near 80m with the T120Lasse Karlsson wrote: ↑Sun May 08, 2022 6:59 pm Hi James
