Hi Graeme,
If I understand you correct, you move your rod sideways (off vertical plane), but want the legs of the loop stay in vertical loop plane.
I have doubts, that this possible.
Hi Bernd,
Yes, it’s possible and it’s more common than you think. The most obvious occurrence is the snap in a snap-C cast.

The loop orientation is determined by the plane the tip occupies.

We see (and correct) the other version all the time (vertical rod, horizontal loop) so why would that not be possible with a rod laid on the side?

Cheers, Graeme

Hi Torsten,
In the Gebetsroither style Roman Moser was the best I saw. His final turn over went fly-leg above the rod-leg as soon as he had medium carry (some rod bend).
In Switch casting I usually see this:

Second one was done by Tony Riley. Best I saw.

Great movie, Graeme. But the MPR is short and relatively stiff. Tip path shows much less deviation to main launch path. Here's a frame grab from a video of avg casting.

Hi Bernd,

sure, with this style of casting you'll have also a horizontal component due to the flexible fly rod and counterflex. More important however is, what you're doing when transmitting energy to the line or with other words doing work. The majority of the energy is transferred before the tip curves off the line path. We can cast in a 3D space and are not constrained to a plane and for several casts it makes sense to leave the 2D plane. Also the fly leg is more important than the rod leg because it carries the major amount of Ekin.
In above sequence I'd say that Riley had to place the anchor far way, if you don't need this you can get the loop closer to the body and more vertical.

Greetings,
Torsten

Hi Graeme,
Here's an example from the office jungle
Can you try this with an "ordinary" fly rod?
(I think it's possible to get at least close to a vertical USD loop, better than Bernd's sequences suggest)

Torsten, Gaeme,
I ve started a thread in the teaching section about tracking and loop planes. I find it worth to further discuss. Thanks!

Yep, I'll video it in the park before I start work tomorrow. These are not upside down loops though, if that's what USD means. They are just normal loops with a rod canted to the side.

Graeme

Yep very useful for throwing heavy flies when sight fishing. Crab patterns for example. The fly lands more gently, doesn’t kick left/right and the loop is below the fish’s window.

You can thrust the rod out to counteract counterflex. Just as with the inverted loop.

I like this “roll over the top” loop and use it here with shots too.

Cheers, Paul
It's an exploration; bring a flyrod.

Hi Torsten and Bernd,

Here's that video with the 9' rod. The video production is not great and it was a bit gusty, but I think it shows that nearly vertical loops can be made with a nearly horizontal rod at various distances. (I did cast to 75' for one of the clips but it's too far to see what's going on with a 6wt line.)

Cheers,
Graeme
