Is this fly casting?

Post by Phil31 »

I can't help but pose this question.

Firstly I must confess that I enjoy a good bit of euro nymphing.

One criticism of often hear of euro nymphing is that it's 'lobbing' not 'casting'. My response is that bad euro nymphing involves lobbing but good euro nymphing involves casting. I work on my euro 'cast' as much as I work on my traditional cast.

The video below I am casting a 2.5mm single tungsten fly. So not a great deal of weight and would be quite hard to lob accurately.

I was out recently and a friend got some footage in a light where you could actually see the euro leader which is rare. I would be interested in opinions on whether the motion in the video is something resemblant of a fly cast?

Whether or not it's fly fishing or not is a discussion for another day

I couldn’t tell you the difference, if there is a difference between lobbing and casting but what I will say is that video is one of the coolest I’ve seen. Placing your nymph around or between those rocks is in my opinion is really cool. I couldn’t even tell you the difference between euro nymphing and throwing a dry fly as my FF experience is in the salt only.
Anyway, thanks for sharing this.

I like French Nymphing. But I wouldn’t want to do it all the time. I do believe it’s easier than some other Nymphing techniques. But done to a high level it’s an extremely high level. I believe I’m more focussed with the FN.

Cheers,
Paul

We don’t have Euronymphing in Europe, it’s American :D .

In Europe, we have French, Spanish and Czech nymphing because the leader set ups are different. The casting technique is down to the mass of the flies and heavy fly combinations are lobbed, but sight nymphing with a long leader and light flies are cast. When I’m feeling lazy and the situation demands it, I’ll stick a dry on and cast that but not for long.

I can’t get excited about the definitions because the fishery rules determine legality and nymphing isn’t fly fishing anyway :p

I know Czech and French. What is Spanish? I see French as a logical development of Czech.

I know the leader. Zjelko showed this to me back when I was living in Hungary and I asked RÍO for some of their indicator mono. I still prefer all clear, it makes me focus harder!! For me that’s still FNing because of the technique. I didn’t know the leader had come out of Spain.

Cheers, Paul

There was an AAPGAI instructor that used to say it’s just short or long leader nymphing. I guess competition anglers like lots of labels like casting geeks and stamp collectors :p
