Learning to double haul

Post by Bluejacket »

I am trying to learn to double haul using my 4wt rod with a double taper line. Should I be using a heavier wt line say like a 6wt which may give me a better sense of the rod loading and improve my timing?

Paul was teaching me, and all I had was a 4wt at the time, and it worked for me. I think its easier with a heavier line but a 4wt line works

Hi Ed, welcome to the Board!

The tackle is fine. Is the line clean and slick? Sometimes (often) the problem with slack line is the line not shooting on the backcast. This can of course be because the back loop is too wide, but it can also be because of the friction between the line and the rod. This is what I do…

TWISTED... off-setting rod rings

There is a page and video here on learning the Double Haul..

https://www.sexyloops.com/flycast/the-double-haul/

Best way to learn is to break it down using side cast and learning in stages as in the video above.

A heavier line will probably make it easier. I know many instructors who teach double hauling using a short shooting head. But twisting the rings out and concentrating on tight loops should be enough.

Cheers, Paul

Be careful not to use load as « the » indicator for timing. There is a risk of tailing for the line. Ideally the haul timing should be late by comparison to « load » timing. Speed is the goal, and load is a trap (I falled in when I started hauling).

Agreed, I had a few students wanting to learn double haul in 20 minutes at the Game Fair last week. All of them struggled with the asymmetric hand movements, although they managed to hit the occasional one right.

If you use the triangle method, ground to ground, side to side, I teach that the haul should start as the rod tip passes the midpoint. Just to get things rolling. You can break things down, one stage at a time. I’ll do an updated video of this quite soon.

I’m trying to make a Roll Cast video today that includes Pullback and Stopless. Vince will love it.

Incidentally Ed, while most people think that the haul is something that we add to the stroke, after a while it should start to feel that the stroke is added to the haul. The haul is the conductor of the symphony!

Cheers, Paul

I’m trying to learn the double haul and have been watching Mel Kreigers dvd. It is helping but I still need a lot of practice. I have read somewhere that it helps to use a shooting line when learning to double haul. My question is this; I have a 5 wt rod that I will be putting it on, do they come in line weights and if not what should I be looking for?
Thanks
Gregg
