In my reading I noticed some authors advocate sweeping the rod into the bank regardless if the degree change is 45 or 90.
What are the advantages doing that when the degree change is 45?

Hi Lou,

with 45 degrees it is an unnecessary movement, however sometimes when someone is struggling to turn the anchor around with a 45 degree angle change then I teach a 90 with the in-sweep. However once you've learned the cast it shouldn't be necessary with a 45 degree angle change.

Hi Lou,

Where problems come in is when the student lifts outstream and not vertically. This makes it difficult to turn the anchor around. Cutting into the bank prevents from happening, but for a minor angle change such as this, so long as the Lift is vertical, it shouldn’t be a problem to turn the anchor (and would be seen as wasted movement). At least that’s how I see it and how it’s examined at AAPGAI.

I just finished watching most of your single hand spey cast, I see sweeping towards the back comes in handy with other spey cast...good info.

I'm back watching the SL app video for the 90 degree SS. The second move after the sweep towards the bank looks like a diagonal move across the body to position the anchor.

Hi Lou,

You can actually make the second movement to be a cast outwards across the lake, when you are adventurous. I’m not sure at which point this becomes a different cast but they are all Single Speys to me!

I cut in for large angle changes.
