why is a Loop called a Loop and where do you measure its tig
Hi all,
Does anyone in here know why we call the things we throw LOOPS?
i ask this because per definition a loop has to be something closed, which is never happening in Flycasting Loops.
And the other question would be when talking about tight loops where to measure the tightness of a loop. V loops for example dont carry the same tightness all the way....
just thinking about this, any ideas?
cheers and tight lines
Michael

I have no idea why, but I can't think of a better name for it. Have you got one in mind?

Looking at definitions, it makes sense to look deep, and there's several explanations for the definition that isn't a closed loop...
Have no idea who came up with using it in flyfishing, but looking at the definition of a loop, its not hard to see that someone early on would have used it to describe the shape we see after we have accelerated a piece of string.
And since both the definitions and flyfishing are several hundred years old, we need someone with a good library to look
Does size matter?
Cheers

Taught by my father, who was likely self taught, I learned the concepts of buckles and bights.
Loop formation was getting the line to buckle.
Then, the goal was to shape and maintain the bight.
Likely, this terminology has a basis in sailing.
I never heard of a loop until after college and thought it was a less accurate term.

Hi everyone.
If the term "loop" is in use for a century, then I am sure, it would take at least 5 centuries to replace that term. So I'll have no chance to see that happening anyway.
Cheers

I measure it at its widest point from top to bottom. However others like to measure it closer to the nose, which makes it tighter of course!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your replies
thanks merlin for this source
yes bernd i agree on this one and there s also no reason to change the name of it yet word travels faster today than 100 years ago and that is very cool. in a way - or is isnt it?
Mangrove coockoo,
that is very interseting what u say there:
Connection to sailing - can you please explain what you mean by that and where the connection is?
getting the line to buckle!!! i love this man, btw "boucle" in french is loop like the tour de france ( le grand boucle, originally ending where it started, in paris i suppose)
I d really like to hear more about tht from you, thanks. And i dont understand what bight is, but i will look it up.
you re all very helpfull here and measuring it like paul sais at the max width makes probably sense.....but also a lot of tight loops look very wide (if they were measured) . MAking it look tighter seems to be a big part of it anyway i have the impression.
Cheers and tight lines
