Feelings in competitive sport
Re: Feelings in competitive sport
I can't think of another throwing activity that requires the thrower to literally "form" the object that is being thrown during the act of throwing. A frisbee is a frisbee, a baseball is a baseball, and a javelin is still a javelin regardless of how it's thrown, but a fly line loop is created by the caster during the act of casting. It's a unique object requiring a unique way of forming and throwing it. The others require brute adrenaline charged max speed at launch, the fly line requires that plus artistry

Is it mandatory to wear stilettos and a leotard to demonstrate artistry? Asking for a competition caster

I can't speak for javelins, but if you do not think there is artistry in throwing a curve ball , or even trying to throw a frisbee straight... you obviously have never tried to do either.
But why stop TOOYA now?

Re: Feelings in competitive sport
Take golf or a tennis swing for example. The racket or club path is curved through the stroke to make contact with the ball. The contact time with the ball is only for a relatively small part of that stroke. In flycasting the moment we pull the line we are shaping the loop. Consequently we need to be straight for usually much longer. That requirement undoubtedly reduces our ability to apply maximum force.
It is a more constrained throwing movement. But for me it is still a throwing movement and the importance of stability, sequence of movement, sequence of stopping movement, all still apply. It’s just that we have the additional constraint that we are shaping a loop, which for many casts (accuracy and distance for example) will usually mean the formation of a vertical loop and a straight fly leg. (That’s obviously not getting into the all the additional things that we can do with the loop shape).
So I agree and I think that always has to be considered when comparing different throwing actions. We have some additional limitations imposed upon us in order to shape the loop.
Cheers, Paul

Re: Feelings in competitive sport
Who moves the flyrod in a straight line throughout the stroke? Thought agreement was on rotation, which is curved. We use a bendy stick to turn that into something straighter. Loops are just a byproduct of our movements. The shaping is no different than the shaping of the golfballs path after impact, the frisbees flight after launch, the baseballs movements after release.

Re: Feelings in competitive sport
Could you show the same pictures for a delivery cast done 170 technique? Thanks.
Cheers
Lasse
Ps your drawing is hella inaccurate, judging from the pics, the balls path is quite straight....

I think the front view of this would be quite different.
