Long distance Jump Rolls /Switch.

Post by Paul Arden »

Hi folks,

I thought I would stick this one in casting sport, despite the fact that there aren’t too many times we compete with this cast! Although there are certainly times when we need our longest jump roll when fishing.

Many years ago I compared not hauling on the D loop set up to hauling on the D loop set up and measured distance on the forward cast. Actually during those particular tests I didn’t measure with a tape. But I did have some pretty conclusive results and it was flat calm so easy to compare.

I’m curious as to who else has done this and what they found? I found that not hauling on the backcast D loop set-up gave me my longest delivery casts. Not a huge difference but certainly a difference.

I can think of three possible reasons: 1) I lose tension when returning the hauling hand 2) the alternative to this is two half hauls, and therefore lack of speed on the delivery haul and 3) flicking the rod back to form the D might create higher tension in the D loop.

This was a MED line I was using for the test.

Cheers, Paul

Hi Paul,

I experimented with this a long time ago (around 20 years).
For me the hauled casts gave me the longest switch casts by far.

I used a Vision extreme distance #6 line and could cast it to the backing knot (110ft). The Vision had a very thin running line, and might have been overweight, which of course helped.
For me the key was picking up a fairly long line and I had no problems getting my hauling hand back.

Maybe you should start a virtual challenge and see where we get? I think we will see some impressive casts.

As an addition to my previous post.
I used a double haul.

Hi Bart,

I’m not questioning the forward haul. Simply a Switch cast with and without a back haul when setting up the D loop.

I see.
Hauling on the backcast gave me the longest distance.

Very interesting. I get more by not hauling on the backcast. I wonder where the difference are.

How far are you consistently getting in 0 wind conditions? Just so we have a benchmark for your findings Paul ;)
And what line? I expect a 9 foot rod anyways.

Cheers
Lasse, hauled backcast for me when sharp, non hauled when dull....

There's been a switch cast competition in Sweden at the biggest sportfishing fair since 2010, everyone casts the same gear, so a rod that says 5 and a line that says 5 but is a 6 and mid belly ish. It's cast indoor.

Most haul the backcast.

The only time I’ve measured them was off a dam with Bernd and Lee, when we had a mini shootout. We cast various 5&6 long belly lines. Mid 70s to low 90s from memory. Hang on we might have posted that on the board…

Can’t find it. Bernd might have it. But I’m pretty sure I was hauling on those back loops.
