Tennis Elbow problems

#1

Post by Paul Arden »

Has anyone come across tennis elbow in the hauling arm before? Is there a particular angle or twist that would potentially cause it?

I’ve never had it and up to yesterday had never heard of it.

Cheers, Paul

Try pinging Ulrik, he might have heard of it?

I haven't either.

I’ve had the first stages of it early on in my casting. I recognised the symptoms early enough to take avoiding actions.

Less wrist and elbow action and a smoother haul fixed it for myself.

I’ve not had tennis elbow but have had similar muscular injuries.

All you can really do is rest it, stop doing the things that hurt it... lifting, twisting etc... and compress it with ice.

A real pain for you, but I would focus on the above and getting to better otherwise it will no doubt deteriorate and take longer to fully recover.

It’s not me, it’s a course student. I had it myself on the rod arm side from casting and fishing a very stiff rod (TCR10) for 6 weeks straight about 10 years ago. I did have a minor case of it in the left elbow from an outboard motor that had a dinked prop.

He says the problem is exasperated when hauling to a straight arm, which is a problem. Less elbow might be a solution Graeme. Could you return to using more elbow afterwards?

Cheers, Paul

I started to get pain from snapping the arm straight, I don’t do that anymore.

Yep, but I have still kept it a bit under full extension and a bit smoother than before.

Have/did you tried hauling with the hand in different planes, or twisting through the haul? I turn the thumb in past the body. Does that make it worse or better?

Thanks,
Paul

I don’t remember doing such things but it’s too late now to experiment. I haven’t had the problem for years. And I’m not going to reinjure myself for the sake of science. 😁
