Maybe this thread is appropriate for the material I found in German, although it’s deeper than pop science

I have said it many times, mate.Stoatstail50 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 9:44 amI agree. Do you think it should stay like that Bernd ?In all exams fly casting was and is a bigger part compared to teaching itself.
Change the headline into:
Certified Fly Caster
Built the exam for casting only.
That is a huge market. Much bigger than those few who enter the exams in order to become a teacher and a million times bigger than those 3 ppl. who entered an exam while going to make their living on teaching.
It's a hobby and most candidates look for a casting challenge.
At least that's what I experienced.

Then maybe they should start tournament casting instead

Hi Nils,
Offer a tournament, in which:
A) all cast the same equipment
B) the equipment matches fishing equipment
C) the organiser offers the equipment
D) give a cert for what one achieved by not leaving out what wind it was
and I am sure, that much more would enter.
I know many who have no interest in playing roulette at the end of a long training period and then get nothing but a bad experience in return.
Huge difference between tournament and "instructor" certs ime.
That aside I agree with your point in general.

Each point you raise may be an impediment to increasing participation rates in casting sport, however, why don't you see more participants casting fly accuracy events? Those events use standard fishing gear, but where are the anglers who want to compete in events using standard fishing gear?
If standard gear is the panacea, why don't they cast in accuracy events? Obviously there are other issues preventing their participation. Could the reason be as basic as they don't want to compete against other casters/fishers and have their performance ranked? Ditto, why do we not see increased participation in the few indoor casting competitions held? No wind indoors, well, not the meteorological kind anyway.

I don’t buy that either. If you take an assessment, your ego is put on the line and failing is demoralising. Why haven’t you taken an instructor assessment John?Could the reason be as basic as they don't want to compete against other casters/fishers and have their performance ranked?

There are at least 3 casting schemes out there offering Bronze, Silver and Gold awards to my knowledge and as far as I’m aware, there’s about the same take up as tournament casting. I think that aside from geeks, there’s very little interest in casting at all except as a gateway to fishing. Even then, people will learn the bare minimum to achieve their fishing objective and there are other rabbit holes to dive down, particularly fly tying. I fly fished for about 10 years before I got a lesson and got by with the watercraft I’d learned from other types of fishing.Bernd Ziesche wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 8:39 pm I have said it many times, mate.

If you are not interested in casting, casting isn’t very interesting.

Re: Internt vs. eksternt fokus: Effekter på motorisk læring
A few years ago I created the SL casting challenge, initially for Tim coaching some club members in Australia who then decided it was too difficult (the club members, not Tim!). But I have students now who would like a greater challenge having done this, which I’m working on.
I do think it’s a very good idea to do this. Particularly at the highest levels. There are certainly students who would rather have a casting challenge as a goal instead of a competition. I obviously need to create a lower level too
Cheers, Paul

It’s more often fishing that’s spurred me into a deep dive for casting. A few months ago, it was casting heavy nymphs in confined spaces that exercised me, recently it was pike fishing casts up to 50ft with a hedge 12ft behind. The awards I leave for Mutley

Re: Internt vs. eksternt fokus: Effekter på motorisk læring
I agree that’s the ultimate ticket, Vince. But if we don’t challenge ourselves to perform these casts in training then we can’t do it when it matters most.
My measure is putting the shots in, first time, where I want them. That’s my game. But I only get 4 casts/day on average. That won’t happen without proper training. I’m quite sure that my competition casting has given me the skills to make high-pressure shots. Even though the shots here requite additional skills, the targeting, stopless nature and line speed are all in there.
I put about 90% in on the money first time. I am trying to improve this; the shots that don’t go in completely disturb my enlightened state of mind and anyone else no doubt within 10km who hear me. I’d like to be able to make overpowered curved snakehead shots in both directions and not only right to left. Basically I want to catch them all
Ironman is another good example for me. Ironman is my challenge but I don’t do it for the T shirt and medal. I do it because it makes me train 6 days/week and the fitness results enhance my life.
And now… I’m going to try to find a few shots! Lessons tonight and then a bike ride. My day is full
Cheers, Paul
