Re: Defining Haul
If it’s not “during the Casting Stroke” then stripping line during the retrieve is also hauling.
If it’s not given the purpose to accelerate the line then it clashes with Strip Hauling where you need to define purpose to make sense of the difference.
Strip Hauling. Pulling the line through the rod rings during the Casting Stroke. This is commonly done during false casting to shorten the length of line being aerielised. (Or something like that).
Cheers, Paul

Re: Defining Haul
It’s not like we haven’t mentioned purpose before in definitions. https://www.sexyloops.com/flycasting/definitions2.shtml
Re: Defining Haul
Pulling line through the guides during the casting stroke to increase line speed?
I think we are converging to something I can work with regarding hauling speed, effectiveness and efficiency…

PS. I have a flying tank. Your argument is irrelevant.
PSS. How to generate a climbing loop through control of the casting stroke is left as a (considerable) exercise to the reader.

Re: Defining Haul
I’d be happy with that.

Re: Defining Haul
I would like some more input. Particularly on the specific wording. We know one or two wordsmiths on the Board

Re: Defining Haul
How would you define “Check Haul”?
Re: Defining Haul
It fits part of the definition but it happens after the stroke. If I was on the FFI definitions committee I would probably insist on calling it a “check drift” and imply that it is some sort of fault.
A haul made after loop formation to facilitate loop turn over?
Wordsmithing would be good.

Re: Defining Haul
Walter,My suggestion is that we define haul as relative movement between the line and rod hands during the casting stroke.
Your forgetting that the haul distance is the difference between the haul hand and the stripper guide not the distance between the hands. Your definition would leave out the impact of rod rotation which is the dominate effect on the back cast.

Re: Defining Haul
Gordy,
This definition is specifically what the haul is. Not the haul distance, haul speed or the back cast. It’s similar to defining the casting stroke as using the rod to apply force to the line in order to form a loop. Rod speed, arc and loop size come after that.
My goal is to get a consensus of what the haul is before looking at defining distance or speed and how to measure those.
