Are you saying this is a problem and costs him distance?

I don't think language gets in the way in general. But fly casting instructors every now and then used commonly defined words in a pretty different way ending up in some confusion after figuring the common use.
Arc, constant acceleration, power application, plane and more come to my mind.
Also simple things like the haul. Some mean the line hand pull, thers the line moving thru the guides.
Fly fishing is a hobby for 99% and there have always been terms being used in kind of self defined ways.

For teaching, the language needs to be accessible for the student rather than the instructor and we are teaching movement skills, not creating models to solve dynamics problems.

I haven’t said anything about it. However yes I do believe it costs distance. But there is always the biomechanics to consider. The optimal distance loop might be vertically stacked, originating from a vertical casting plane, however we also have to consider the human body mechanics, as well as hauling constraints.

You will commonly see a slightly canted rod on the platforms. I know mine is. The best casters in this event however are also the straightest. Include some wind and it’s not a major issue. Remover the wind and it certainly matters. Unfortunately it’s very difficult to physically power a truly vertical rod, and so we look for the best compromise.

Fishing is a great hobby for retired competition casters but you have to be careful not to line them with 90ft of MED
